The Entrepreneur; Succeeding with Bible-Principled Strategies.
This piece is for people who have made up their minds to let go of salaried work and forge ahead on their own in the business world. It is a rule book for people who have agreed to become entrepreneurs and need a sure-fire way to succeed. You will find answers here. However, we are compelled to take some few paragraphs in our introduction and make you understand why you need to be your own employer, if you are not yet fully convinced or consolidate your decision if you have decided to. The reasons are varied but simple and of course they are lifted straight from what the bible prescribes. A portion of the life story of a slave boy tells us all we need to know about servitude which is what paid employment is veiled as. Genesis 39 has the necessary narration;
1. And Joseph was brought down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him of the hands of the Ishmeelites, which had brought him down thither.
2. And the LORD was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.
3. And his master saw that the LORD was with him, and that the LORD made all that he did to prosper in his hand.
4. And Joseph found grace in his sight, and he served him: and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand.
5. And it came to pass from the time that he had made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that the LORD blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake; and the blessing of the LORD was upon all that he had in the house, and in the field.
6. And he left all that he had in Joseph’s hand; and he knew not ought he had, save the bread which he did eat. And Joseph was a goodly person, and well favoured.
Paid Employment is Slavery.
and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him of the hands of the Ishmeelites
Paid employment is limiting and inhibiting because you have been bought for a price. No matter how flexible a company can be in its policies it still has policies that you must conform to such as time for resumption and closing, dress codes, fixed income at a fixed duration, and other policies that everyone obeys except the boss, the entrepreneur. Only he has the powers to grant waivers and he is not bound by these laid down rules. He may follow them but he is not bound by them. God’s intention is for his children to have 30 pays in one day and not go through 30 days for a pay. This kind of modern day, self-agreed slavery can also affect your spiritual life in many ways; It could curtail your time for attending spiritual activities; bible studies, meetings, evangelism, etc and it may constrain you to do things that normally you wouldn’t have agreed to do such as telling lies for the boss or selling a product that you know is not good. It is also in paid employment that you meet people that tell you that you are no good because you could not meet a target that others are achieving irrespective of their ‘unorthodox’ means of achieving it. To your employer the Machiavellian Principle of ‘the end justifies the means’ applies and you should be ready to do anything to be worth your salary.
Paid Employment Negates Gods Idea of Inheritance and Posterity.
and he was in the house of his master
I have heard a lot of people say (and others agree) that the only thing they owe their children is quality education. This is false and misleading; It creates lazy and wasteful parents and disloyal kids. Parents owe their children a home, spirituality, education, monthly stipends, security and a family business in this order of importance. Our children are entitled to a family business they can choose to work in or not. It is a part of the inheritance God says we shall hand over to them at our demise. You may not be able to give them all these outlined above but you should try as much as possible to give it to them and know that all these are our children’s rights and not privileges and that your inability to provide it for them is a great disservice. No matter how big the multinational company you work in is, no matter how high you rise, you can never hand the company over to your children when you die. We even have companies that do not permit relatives to work in the same corporations not to talk of handing it over to your children as their inheritance.
Paid Employment Inhibits the Spirit of Creativity God Bestowed on Us.
This is another form of slavery; slavery of the mind. When God made man he gave him three qualities; freewill, conscience and intuition. Paid employment sucks up these three God-given gifts from us. God didn’t completely create the world he left some things undone for man to finish which is why it is the honor of kings to conceal a thing and the glory of men to reveal it. But paid employment inhibits any freewill that you may want to exhibit. It also de-conscientizes God’s children.
Paid Employment is a Rat Race.
and he made him overseer over his house
A rat race is a race that no one wins and everybody loses; because no matter who wins or loses everyone is still a rat at the finishing line. The Hebrew word for oversee is paqad which primitively translated means visit. Temporary stay. It also means to cater for or take care of. Nowhere did it mean permanency or ownership. The best you can be rewarded with as a staff of a company is promotion and higher wages but no matter how much you are paid you are still a staff and a salary earner. The huge wage bill will never translate into ownership of the company unless you save astutely and buy up a part of the company. No matter how highly recommended Joseph came and later how hard working he was, the best he got was that he was made an overseer which is a staff overseeing other staffs. The prosperity of Joseph did not prompt Portiphar to make Joseph a son with the prospect of an inheritance. Same way Abraham cried to God that ‘the steward of my house is Eliezer of Damascus!’ He couldn’t imagine himself bequeathing his worldly goods on someone who wasn’t his child despite the fact that Eliezer was hardworking and had been made next-in-command. Next-in-command does not necessarily translate into next-in-line. I guess you thought it did. Reuben was definitely next-in-command in the household of Israel but Jacob was next-in-line. Abner was next-in-command to King Saul but David was next-in-line.
Under paid employment we are running against the tide of meeting up our financial obligations with our salaries that is never enough, waiting always for pay day, running against the tide for constant promotion and/or salary increment, but the problem with being a participant in a rat race is that no matter who wins or loses they remain rats. Entrepreneurship gives us the freedom from these chokes that are synonymous with rat races. From Genesis, God has ordered that we dominate the earth and succeed but if you keep at being an employee you end up dominating within the confines of the job which will serve as a restraint to your ability and capacity to dominate; it is like dominating within a box so no matter how hard you dominate you never do beyond the boundaries of the box.
Paid Employment is Poverty Weaning.
Ever heard the cliché “If you want to be poor, get a job” and if I may add “and stay on it” Paid employment are made to be a means to an end and not an end in itself. It was created as an avenue to success and not success itself. But very many of us make the mistake of thinking that if we get that high paying job then we can put to rest our financial troubles. Truth is no matter how big a salary is we always get bigger than it. The route of salaried employment terminates at poverty and inhibitions. You may brag that you did well by yourself; got yourself a good house or houses, sponsored your children to school and even while working you pay them a handsome monthly allowance, entertained yourself (and maybe the family) with vacation trips abroad, got everything that money could buy and lots more. But success is counted in much more ways than enumerated above. Did you give your kids a livelihood via a stable family business? Did you teach them real-life money-making skills that our schools fail to teach? Did you use up your intellect and brains by meeting real challenges and overcoming them even in the face of having no income? Did you eradicate poverty not only for yourself but for your family even to the third generation? that ye may possess this good land, and leave it for an inheritance for your children after you forever. (1 Chronicles 2: 28)
I am looking for any book that listed out great men that achieved greatness as salary earners and even remained so. The closest I have seen is Charles Schwab the President of the United Steel Company one of the biggest conglomerates in American history. He is definitely not what you will call a salary earner per se because he was the Managing Director of the great company and orchestrated the alliance between Andrew Carnegie and J. P Morgan but because he had with him the paid employment mentality (while other investors in the alliance were carting away millions, he got what he wanted; to be the MD of such a great company at a tender age of 40) However, he died bankrupt. Reliance on regular paychecks is a false comfort. Sooner or later you will find yourself worse off than when you were without a job.
Paid Employment is Wealth Transfer
And it came to pass from the time that he had made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that the LORD blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake; and the blessing of the LORD was upon all that he had in the house, and in the field.
Have you ever worked in an organization that refused to acknowledge your resignation when you handed it to them? Stating your unequalled diligence and lack of worthy replacement as a reason while requesting that you please stay and that the salary will be reviewed upwards? I have and a lot of us fall for that sweet talk of irreplaceability to continue on the job. I didn’t. If a lot of people like you then check yourself because the people of this age don’t like anyone when they don’t have anything to benefit from them. The bible says that a righteous man may not find someone to stand for him but many people can die for a good man.
If you have God’s grace and favour and you keep working under another man then you are transferring your wealth to him. The lord blessed the Egyptian for Joseph’s sake. The Lord’s hand of blessing was upon Joseph but because there was nothing to bless of Joseph’s but the works of his hand which was Portiphar’s work, God ultimately had to bless Portiphar. So Portiphar instead increased and prospered at Joseph’s expense.
If it sounds strange or unconvincing then read Joseph’s father’s statement in Genesis 30: 30 For it was little which thou (Laban) hadst before I (Jacob) came, and it is now increased unto a multitude; and the LORD hath blessed thee since my coming: This sure proves that we sell our birthright and covenant blessing when we labour for eternity under people.
